Why Mulching

Why we mulch instead of bulldozing

Nothing leaves your property

No burn piles, no dumpsters, no debris trucks on the lane.

The mulch works for you

Suppresses regrowth, holds moisture, and stops erosion on day one.

Roots stay in the ground

Minimal soil disturbance means most jobs need no earth-moving permits.

Light on the land

Tracked machine, low ground pressure — no ruts through your pasture.

Who You're Hiring

A family company, literally

Castion & Sons is what happened when two families became one. The name is ours the same way the work is: half Castaneda, half Harrison, joined together and put on the door.

We're based in West Grove and this is home ground for us. The properties we clear are the same kind of ground we grew up around, which is why we mulch instead of bulldoze, and why we'd rather walk your land with you than quote it from a satellite photo.

No sales team, no call center. You call, Chris picks up.

Straight Answers

Common questions

What does forestry mulching cost?

It depends on how thick it is, how big the trees are, and how easy it is to get the machine in. That's why we quote in person, free. You'll get one written number for the whole job before we schedule anything.

Do I need a permit?

Usually not for mulching. Because the roots stay in the ground, most mulching work counts as minimal earth disturbance. Grading, stump removal, or disturbing more than an acre can trigger county erosion & sediment rules — we'll flag it in the quote if your job crosses that line, and we call PA One Call (811) before any work near buried utilities.

What size trees can you mulch?

Brush and trees up to roughly 8 inches in diameter mulch cleanly. Bigger trees can be dropped and dealt with separately — we'll walk you through options on site.

Is it safe around horses and livestock?

Yes. We plan the work around your animals, keep gates closed behind us, and leave no debris piles or wire behind. The finished mulch bed is turnout-safe.

Will the brush just grow back?

The mulch layer smothers most regrowth for a season or two and makes what does return easy to maintain. For invasives like multiflora rose, we'll give you a simple follow-up plan so it never gets ahead of you again.
